Strategy games that trust you to think

There's a myth that strategy games can't work on phones. Too fiddly, too much to manage, too small a screen. Having played dozens, I think that's just lazy design talking, not a real limit.

The good ones solve the interface problem with smart zoom and clear icons. You should never lose a battle because you tapped the wrong unit by accident. When a game gets that right, the depth comes through instead of the frustration.

What I love about mobile strategy is the thinking time. You can pause mid-battle, stare at the board, and plan three moves ahead while your coffee cools. That's a luxury you don't always get on console.

Start with skirmish modes if a campaign feels intimidating. A quick standalone battle teaches you the systems faster than any tutorial, and losing a few is part of learning.
